Predicitions and Talkback.
First of all-- brilliant choice in Neil Patrick Harris. He hosted this year's Tony Awards and was phenomenal (Yeah, I watched the Tony's. I'm an actor. I'm strait. Fuck off).
Anyways- here are the nominees. Italics are who I think should win; Bolds are who I think will win. I'll give commentary on some of them.
1. Comedy Supporting Actress
Kristin Chenoweth, "Pushing Daisies," ABC
Amy Poehler, "Saturday Night Live," NBC
Kristin Wiig, "Saturday Night Live," NBC
Jane Krakowski, "30 Rock," NBC
Vanessa Williams, "Ugly Betty," ABC
Elizabeth Perkins, "Weeds," Showtime
Perkins should have won when Weeds first came on... now here character has become a bit more tired. Still has occasional gems, but ultimately... Krakowski is always hilarious on 30 Rock. This is going to be another big 30 Rock year.
2. Comedy Writing
“Flight Of The Conchords - Prime Minister”; HBO
“30 Rock - Apollo, Apollo”; NBC
“30 Rock - Kidney Now!”; NBC
“30 Rock - Mamma Mia”; NBC
“30 Rock – Reunion”; NBC
It seems a little ridiculous- 4 nominations for 30 Rock? Jeeze... I wish they'd go with more variety. Maybe a one-or-two episode per show rule? Meh... 30 Rock is going to win, no question... it's just a matter of which episode. I'm going with Mamma Mia. At the very least, 30 Rock will win. I love FOTC, but they're not the Emmy darling like 30 Rock (and 30 Rock is a better show anyways).
3. Comedy Supporting Actor
Kevin Dillon, "Entourage," HBO
Neil Patrick Harris, "How I Met Your Mother," CBS
Rainn Wilson, "The Office," NBC
Tracy Morgan, "30 Rock," NBC
Jack McBrayer, "30 Rock," NBC
Jon Cryer, "Two and a Half Men," CBS
With the exception of Cryer, this is a solid category. I don't really like Entourage, but Dillon's character has made me laugh quite a bit (Same with HIMYM and Harris). 5 years ago I'd have never thought Tracy Morgan would amount to anything, let alone an Emmy nomination (I didn't like him on SNL)- but he's a riot on 30 Rock. Rainn Wilson would get my vote, because he's responsible for probably 75% of the laughs in any given episode of The Office (usually). I wish Ed Helms would be nominated instead of Cryer. Anyways... McBrayer will win. Like I said, Emmy's love 30 Rock, and McBrayer is great in his role.
4. Comedy Lead Actress
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "The New Adventures of Old Christine," CBS
Christina Applegate, "Samantha Who?" ABC
Sarah Silverman, "The Sarah Silverman Program," Comedy Central
Tina Fey, "30 Rock," NBC
Toni Collette, "United States of Tara," Showtime
Mary-Louise Parker, "Weeds," Showtime
This is the only time I'm really upset with the whole 30 Rock love. Parker is fucking BRILLIANT, yet she's never been recognized by the Emmy's. I'm not taking anything away from Tina Fey- she's got an insane amount of talent, and she's great in her role... but Nancy Botwin is a much more interesting and demanding character than Liz Lemon, and Parker plays her perfectly.
5. Comedy Directing
“Entourage - Tree Trippers” HBO
“30 Rock - Apollo, Apollo” NBC
“Flight Of The Conchords - The Tough Brets” HBO
“30 Rock – Reunion” NBC
“30 Rock – Generalissimo” NBC
“The Office - Stress Relief” NBC
6. Comedy Lead Actor
Jim Parsons, "The Big Bang Theory," CBS
Jemaine Clement, "Flight of the Conchords," HBO
Tony Shalhoub, "Monk," USA
Steve Carell, "The Office," NBC
Alec Baldwin, "30 Rock," NBC
Charlie Sheen, "Two and a Half Men," CBS
Again, too much 30 Rock love. Alec Baldwin is great in his role, but Steve Carell is outstanding... it's amazing how his character can make you feel uncomfortable while still being hilarious.
(NOTE- I'm skipping over Reality and Movie/Miniseries categories. Reality I hate, and I just didn't see the Movies/Miniseries, so I can't judge them. I will say I'm rooting for Ian McKellen because he rocked. I also want to see the Grey Gardens movie, because the documentary it's based on was fantastic).
17. Variety Directing
"American Idol" (Show 833 - The Final Three) Fox
"The Colbert Report" (159) Comedy Central
"The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" (13107) Comedy Central
"Late Show With David Letterman" (Episode 2932) CBS
"Real Time With Bill Maher" (705) HBO
"Saturday Night Live" (Host: Justin Timberlake) NBC
18. Variety Writing
"The Colbert Report" Comedy Central
"The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" Comedy Central
"Late Night With Conan O'Brien" NBC
"Late Show With David Letterman" CBS
"Saturday Night Live" NBC
This is a tough call between Colbert and Daily Show. I'm kind of basing this on last years. We'll see.
19. Original Music & Lyrics
"81st Annual Academy Awards" - Song Title: Hugh Jackman Opening Number ABC
"A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All" - Song Title: "Much Worse Things" Comedy Central
"The 2008 ESPYS" - Song Title: "I Love Sports" ESPN
"Flight Of The Conchords" - "Unnatural Love" / Song Title: "Carol Brown" HBO
"A Muppets Christmas: Letters To Santa" - Song Title: "I Wish I Could Be Santa Claus" NBC
"Saturday Night Live" - Host: Justin Timberlake / Song Title: "Motherlover" NBC
Tough category... Motherlover will probably win. One of the funniest songs to come out of SNL. I'm kind of pulling for FOTC- the songs are always the funniest part of that show.
20. Variety Series
"The Colbert Report" Comedy Central
"The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" Comedy Central
"Late Show With David Letterman" CBS
"Real Time With Bill Maher" HBO
"Saturday Night Live" NBC
I think it's Colbert's time in this category. Daily Show has won it a shit-ton... Colbert deserves it.
21. Drama Supporting Actor
William Shatner, "Boston Legal," ABC
Christian Clemenson, "Boston Legal," ABC
Aaron Paul, "Breaking Bad," AMC
William Hurt, "Damages," FX
Michael Emerson, "Lost," ABC
John Slattery, "Mad Men," AMC
Dammit, Mad Men. I've not seen you- you're good and all, but I just don't have time... but still... Michael Emerson is one of the best parts of Lost. Give the man the freakin' trophy already!!
22. Drama Supporting Actress
Rose Byrne, "Damages," FX Networks
Sandra Oh, "Grey's Anatomy," ABC
Chandra Wilson, "Grey's Anatomy," ABC
Dianne Wiest, "In Treatment," HBO
Hope Davis, "In Treatment," HBO
Cherry Jones, "24," Fox
23. Drama Directing
"Battlestar Galactica" - "Daybreak (Part 2)" Syfy
"Boston Legal" - "Made In China/Last Call" ABC
"Damages" - "Trust Me" FX
"ER" - "And In The End" NBC
"Mad Men" - "The Jet Set" AMC
24. Drama Writing
"Lost" - "The Incident" ABC
"Mad Men - "A Night To Remember" AMC
"Mad Men - "Six Month Leave" AMC
"Mad Men" - "The Jet Set" AMC
"Mad Men" - "Meditations In An Emergency" AMC
Having never seen Mad Men, I can't say which episode will win... but it's the same issue as 30 Rock/FOTC in the Comedy Writing category. Although... this could actually help Lost. Maybe the voters would spread themselves thin among which was the superior episode, and Lost could pull a dark horse. I doubt it... but wishful thinking... "The Incident" was a GREAT episode. Great plot progression, great plot twists, great cliffhangers...
25. Drama Lead Actress
Sally Field, "Brothers & Sisters," ABC
Kyra Sedgwick, "The Closer," TNT
Glenn Close, "Damages," FX Networks
Mariska Hargitay, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," NBC
Elisabeth Moss, "Mad Men," AMC
Holly Hunter, "Saving Grace," TNT
26. Drama Lead Actor
Bryan Cranston, "Breaking Bad," AMC
Michael C. Hall, "Dexter," Showtime
Hugh Laurie, "House," Fox
Gabriel Byrne, "In Treatment," HBO
Jon Hamm, "Mad Men," AMC
Simon Baker, "The Mentalist," CBS
27. Comedy Series
"Entourage," HBO
"Family Guy," Fox
"Flight of the Conchords," HBO
"How I Met Your Mother," CBS
"The Office," NBC
"30 Rock," NBC
"Weeds," Showtime
Basically, I see 30 Rock sweeping.
28. Drama Series
"Big Love," HBO
"Breaking Bad," AMC
"Damages," FX Networks
"Dexter," Showtime
"House," Fox
"Lost," ABC
"Mad Men," AMC
Basically, I see Mad Men sweeping.
