i dont think i've shared this with you guys yet. i work for a successful lawfirm in the virginia area. i just work in the office doing paperwork. nothing too serious. they are strict with me. sometimes too strict. for example, if i were out at the bar, and someone got into a fight with me, i could lose my job. if my name were to appear in the paper for a ticket, i would lose my job immediately. they care about their image a lot, so my life is on spotlight all the time. sometimes it annoys the shit out of me, but it keeps me out of trouble, so its a good thing. some days, i am very busy at work. i spend my entire day filing papers, answering phone calls, and performing other smaller duties like making sure the office is cleaned up, coffee pot is full, and running out to get lunch on the days that they are too busy to go out to lunch. if things are slow, i can hang out on my laptop. if anyone comes in to the office, i take care of them, but as soon as they are where they need to be, i can hang out on my laptop again. i'm actually taking online college courses because i have time to work on it. its the perfect job to have. i get paid pretty good money. i don't kill myself at my job and i have a decent amount of free time to take college courses online and to hang out on this site. pretty good set up if you ask me.

I used to run my fathers business which was vehicle repair (body work/car crashes). Times were good and money was good. Unfortunately i was young and not knowledgeable enough to deal with expanding the business, i had my plans but was not ready to put them into practice, i needed a couple more years behind me. In the mean time, due to some underhanded tactics by a major vehicle manufactorer, we lost a huge section of our workload, literally 70% lost over the space of 2 days. In this business you spend A LOT of money on premises, staff, equipment and stock etc.
It took only 2 weeks for the effects to be felt, we had to continue to pay money out but was not getting anywhere near enough in.
4 weeks passed, unable to obtain the same level of business elsewhere the business was in the dog house.
I stupidly took my savings and borrowed more (thing mid-range 5 figures) in the hope of keeping things going long enough to find a way out but it did not happen. My dad was awesome at his job, repairing cars, he started at 15 and built his own business up for over 30 years, but to progress in this trade you have to 'get into bed' with big insurers and manufactorers, and whilst my dad is a smart man, he was not a sharp, cunning businessman.
So, after approx 2 months we decided to give up, just about holding onto the family home when the debt collectors came knocking.
The business shut down and i was left to find a job, having only ever really worked in this trade aside from some saturday jobs in shops etc.
I had a degree in Media Studies, but that didnt help.
Ended up working for London Underground, hated it. Constant abuse, terrible on the social life due to 24 hour shift work and honestly, i had (and still have) bigger aspirations.
So, in the hope of moving on i ended up taking a job back in the car repair business. They found me and offered me decent money and prospects.
I took the job working for a medium sized company, it was going well. I was a manager, staff reported to me and i was well thought off.
April this year get called into a meeting, the company is closing down. Credit Crunch.
Luckily i got 'head hunted' again and offered a job straight away. But its not great, same kind of work but with limited progression avaliable.
I can do this job with my eyes shut and need a challenge.
Im trying to find one, but in the current climate it is risky leaving a job to start something fresh when you have a mortgage, debts (from investing my savings and more in the family business) and hoping to start a family next year.
ANYWAY...i said way more than i thought i would, but suddenly just found myself typing...kinda nice to write it down actually.
I do hate my job, but it pays the bills for now. Im not 30 yet so im positive ill move onto bigger and better things.

Don't worry I hate mine too.
I work at a fucking skate rink that is gonna be closing by mid January. I'm making $150 a week to do everything. I work 6-9 on Wednesdays. then All weekend. I start at like noon on Fridays and go till 11pm. then Saturday I get there at 11am and leave around 11:30pm. Then Sunday from about 11am until 7pm. If you want to do the math...I make between $4.25 and $4.75 an hour. I might as well go get a nice tan and stand outside Home Depot waiting for a truck to drive by that I can hop in.....
But, I'm stuck there because I was trying a business venture. After putting up $50,000 on our house to try and make the company bigger and better, it's a cunt hair away from bankrupt. Not to mention the money we put into it to keep it running in the off season. This area sucks.
Now I'm stuck at the rink because I've looked in this area, I've looked in the Pittsburgh area and the Philadelphia area.....dozens apon dozens of businesses, applications....not even a fucking phone call.
Like Luke, I have bigger asperations. But, I have no degree and can't afford any school. I'm gonna try though but, between my job, finances, friends, family, wife and life in general...I';m better off living in a fucking whole in the middle of a deserted waste land....

I own my own home remodeling business. Love it. Not as busy as I'd like, but 4 - 5 years ago, I was really busy. The past 3 years, I've worked for another construction company. Full time work, but I got laid off every winter. I had my business also, so I made out ok. At the end of July, I really fucked up my back. The second time in 7 years.
I've been out on workmans comp since. I have two herniated discs and sciatica really bad. I go to physical therapy 2 - 3 times a week and I'm there for 2 - 3 hours every time. I started going back to college this past semester. My doctor told me I should look into something else for work. The economy sucks, and there aren't a lot of jobs out there, so college has been good. I've got a 4.0 going (although thats going to change because of my stupid western civ class), and am all set for classes next semester.
Once workmans comp runs out, I'll need to get a new job. I'm planning on doing my business as well. I've already got 3 jobs lined up, which is nice. They aren't huge jobs, but they're good enough to help pay bills. All in all, things are alright.
I should add though, while I enjoy going to college, I really wish my back wasn't so fucked. I'll be very happy when I can live like a normal human being again.

i work for a tree cutting and well service in the state of Virginia. (not originally from around here....thank god). i make great money both when not working and when working. heavy equipment operators and timber cutters is the shit. i love being a dozer operator but would so much rather cut timber cause the pay is awesome. not mine but this is a Caterpillar D9, which is what i operate. i love dozing shit, running shit over releases anger, and i run over alot of shit. but the timber buisness is really fucking scary and super fucking dangerous. last year six men were killed by a single tree cut.
