I've done a few of these before... I'm an awards-show junkie (at least, with the "real" ones- fuck MTV). (Also, fuck the Grammy's, they totally fucked up their nominations this year). I really like the Golden Globes... it's not quite as prestigious as Oscars or Emmys, but I like that all the nominees are things I can grasp. I don't care about the technical awards... but as an actor/writer, and someone who loves film and tv (though not as much as theatre), I find the Golden Globes to be able to hold my interest.
Before I get to the nominees... Ricky Gervais? Fuck yes! Hell, the Globes have been host-less for like 15 years... The only person I'd rather see than Gervais is Conan O'Brien, who did a great job with the Emmys back in the day (Once the Oscars come round, I'll talk about Steve Martin/Alec Baldwin).
Anyways... nominees... Bold for who I think will win, Italic for who I think SHOULD win, and commentary where I feel it necessary.
Best Motion Picture -- Drama
Avatar
The Hurt Locker
Inglorious Basterds
Precious
Up in the Air
This is a tough one. I think Precious is gonna win some acting awards, but nothing else... UitA was great, and has been getting the most buzz, but Inglorious Basterds worked on so many levels- great tension, great diologue, great fun. But it's not going to win. It'll be either Hurt Locker or UitA... and I'm going with UitA.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Drama
Emily Blunt, The Young Victoria
Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side
Helen Mirren, The Last Station
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Gabourey Sadibe, Precious
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Drama
Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
George Clooney, Up in the Air
Colin Firth, A Single Man
Morgan Freeman, Invictus
Tobey Maguire, Brothers
Best Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
(500) Days of Summer
The Hangover
It's Complicated
Julie & Julia
Nine
Again, VERY tough. But Nine has the dramatic advantage. I hate how they combine musicals with comedy, because Nine very much belongs in the Best Drama section. But Nine was a piece of shit from what I gather (I've not seen it, but even my musical theatre friends hated it). 500 Days of Summer MIGHT be able to sneak the win, and I hope it does; it was great. I love that The Hangover is on here... it's not going to win, but it's great to see it nominated (It's even been getting Oscar buzz, since there are now 10 Best Picture nominations. I don't think it'll happen, though).
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
Sandra Bullock, The Proposal
Marion Cotillard, Nine
Meryl Streep, It's Complicated
Meryl Streep, Julie and Julia
Julia Roberts, Duplicity
She'll win it for both, really, unless she splits the vote, in which case I could see Sandra Bullock sneaking the win... but I'm seeing Street take the award. She's a better actress than the other three. But sometimes I feel like she always gets nominated BECAUSE she's Meryl Streep. I don't think her role in "It's Complicated" was by any means a stretch for her, and could have been handled well by other actresses- and yet other actresses would not have gathered a nomination. It's not to say Streep isn't brilliant- she is- but she doesn't need any more awards or nominations to prove it.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Musical or Comedy
Matt Damon, The Informant
Daniel Day Lewis, Nine
Robert Downey Jr., Sherlock Holmes
Joseph Gordon Levitt, (500) Days of Summer
Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man
Daniel Day Lewis... again, the dramatic edge of a musical over a comedy. I wish Zach Galifianakis was nominated here... that'd be great.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Mo-Nique, Precious
Julianne Moore, A Single Man
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
Vera Farmiga, Up in the Air
Penelope Cruz, Nine
I loved Farmiga in UitA. Her character development was superb. Mo-Nique will win, she's been getting the buzz for ages. I'm not a fan of Mo-Nique's comedy, but I guess she's proved to be a good actress... at least in this role.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Matt Damon, Invictus
Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
Christopher Waltz, Inglorious Basterds
Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
Why bother having other nominees? It's Waltz all the fuckin' way.
Best Animated Feature Film
Coraline
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
The Princess and the Frog
Up
Had Fantastic Mr. Fox or Coraline come out against, say, Cars (Pixar's worst film by far), it may have had a chance. Maybe even against Ratatouille or The Incredibles. But Pixar made what many think is their best film (I still think WALL-E is their best). Maybe they should do a "Best Pixar Film of the Half-Decade" every five years, and keep Pixar films ineligable for this category.
Best Foreign Language Film
Barria
Broken Embraces
A Prophet
The White Ribbon
The Maid
Haven't seen any of these, so...
Best Director -- Motion Picture
Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker
James Cameron, Avatar
Clint Eastwood, Invictus
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
Quentin Tarantino, Inglorious Basterds
It's tough to distinguish "Best Director" from "Best Picture." Again, a really tough one... and Cameron MIGHT win since it's so well-known how hard he worked on Avatar. But I don't think it'll happen.
Best Screenplay -- Motion Picture
Up in the Air
It's Complicated
District 9
The Hurt Locker
Inglorious Basterds
Best Original Score -- Motion Picture
Michael Giacchino, Up
Marvin Hamlisch, The Informant
James Horner, Avatar
Abel Krozeniowski, A Single Man
Karen O. and Carter Burwell, Where the Wild Things Are
Best Original Song -- Motion Picture
"I Will See You," Avatar
"The Weary Kind," The Crazy Heart
"Winter," Brothers
"Cinema Italiano," Nine
"I Want to Come Home," Everybody's Fine
Haven't seen any of these yet... so I don't know.
I'll do TV in the next post, just to make sure I don't lose everything all of the sudden...
